A Resolution to Accept and Implement a Grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity under Public Act 103-0006
end
BACKGROUND:
In September, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity notified the Joliet Police Department that the sum of $200,000 was appropriated from the General Revenue Fund. The funding agency provided few parameters on potential expenditures, solely explaining that they were to be used for criminal justice purposes. In addition, they indicated that this reimbursement grant must be fully implemented by June 2024. Our department surveyed representatives from several divisions to determine how the funds could make the biggest impact on operations. Three distinct goals were set: replace outdated equipment, embrace technological advancements, and promote inclusivity.
Under this allocation, outdated equipment will be replaced for both the Rapid Response and Evidence units. Headphones and suitable computers for processing large files will be purchased for the Investigations Division and Tactical Units, and the Evidence unit will be provided with key equipment that can better identify surface debris and shoe prints. One individual will be sent to the FBI National Forensic Academy to initiate the professionalization of the evidence unit. Tire deflation technology will be purchased and deployed within the Operations Division. Smaller guns will be made available for those members needing smaller handles. Finally, continued mental health support services will be provided for all members.
The approval process with the funding agency has been quite lengthy; however, they have approved the following uses:
