BACKGROUND:
The Department of Public Works uses the services of contractors to remove snow from various cul-de-sac streets on the east and west sides of Joliet. The Department of Public Works requests that contractors submit snow removal equipment rates prior to the winter season. When authorized by the Department of Public Works or the Parking Superintendent, contractors are requested to have equipment on a standby basis for snow removal once sufficient snow accumulations occur or are predicted.
On January 12th through 13th, approximately 6.3 inches of heavy wet snow fell, followed by rain and snow, and further followed by an expected sudden drop in temperature to sub-zero readings. The sudden drop in temperature would have caused significant freezing over all roadways city-wide. It was determined that it would be necessary to call out contractors to assist with snow removal in the City's cul-de-sacs in order to prevent severe ice buildup.
The Department of Public Works, in conjunction with the Roadways Division, requested four (4) local contractors to remove snow from various cul-de-sacs on the east and west sides of Joliet for this storm. The contractors were called in on January 12, 2024 and remained on-site through the night to complete this work. The Public Service Committee will review this matter.
CONCLUSION:
The Department of Public Works requested the services of four (4) contractors to remove snow from the over 600 cul-de-sacs in the City. The following is the breakdown of costs associated with this removal:
The invoice amounts vary per contractor based on the number of pieces of equipment used, the number of hours worked, and the pre-approved snow removal rates.
