SUBJECT:
title
Resolution Approving an Honorary Street Name (Louise Coleman Drive) for S. Joliet Street, Between McDonough Street and Munroe Street
end
BACKGROUND:
Based on information provided by the applicant, Kendra Coleman, Louise Coleman was dedicated to her neighborhood and a pillar of the South End community. Known as Ms. Lou, she was generous with her love and support and offered advice, wisdom talks, and meals to anyone who needed it. She worked at and eventually managed Seward's Barbershop, at 62 McDonough Street, for many decades. She gave free haircuts to the underserved community and was the "mother of the South End," providing encouragement and support to the youth in the neighborhood to help them stay in school. She lived, worked, and raised her family in this area of Joliet for over 50 years.
On December 18, 2021, the City presented Ms. Coleman with a proclamation that honored her dedication to her community and her instrumental role in the positive development of the young women and men of the City, specifically noting her work with Pastor Ray Fletcher of Sacred Heart Church.
The petition for the Honorary Street Name Application is attached with approximately 50% of the adjoining property owners signing the approval for the honorary street name designation. Ms. Coleman's business, Seward's Barbershop, is located at the southeast corner of McDonough Street and Joliet Street, at the north end of the section of Joliet Street to be designated. This fulfills the requirement for a geographic relationship to the designated street. Ms. Coleman also lived nearby on the 300 block of S. Joliet Street.
The Land Use and Legislative Committee reviewed this request at their meeting on January 11, 2024 and recommended approval of the honorary street name designation for Louise Coleman Drive.
