Resolution Approving an Honorary Street Name (Earl D'Amico Way) for N. Ottawa Street, Between Webster Street and Cass Street
end
BACKGROUND:
The applicant, Ron Romero, has submitted an application for an honorary street name designation for Earl D'Amico due to his contribution to the entertainment and cultural history of Joliet's downtown. Mr. D'Amico was a Joliet restauranteur who owned and operated D'Amico's 214, located at 214 N. Ottawa Street, from 1957 until the 1970s. D'Amico's 214 was a combination of hotel, restaurant, and theater that hosted well-known national acts such as Louis Armstrong, Tina Turner, Phyllis Diller, Henny Youngman, and others. Mr. D'Amico built the Sheraton hotel (now demolished) next to his business to accommodate visiting performers and patrons. D'Amico's 214 had a positive cultural impact on the City of Joliet by bringing world-renowned musicians and actors to the area.
Mr. D'Amico served on the Joliet City Council from 1967 until 1971. He received a proclamation from the City in 2005 for his economic and political contributions to the City of Joliet.
The applicant proposes to designate the section of N. Ottawa Street between Webster Street and Cass Street as "Earl D'Amico Way." 214 N. Ottawa Street, which is now known as the Renaissance Center owned by Joliet Junior College, is located on the east side of this street section. Approximately 50% of the adjoining property owners have signed the attached Honorary Street Name Application.
The Land Use and Economic Development Committee reviewed this request at their meeting on May 9, 2024 and recommended approval of the honorary street name designation for Earl D'Amico Way.
