Ordinance Approving a Street Name Change for a Portion of South Chicago Street to Eastern Avenue (Adjacent to 518, 526, 528 and 536 S. Chicago Street) (SN-1-23)

BACKGROUND:
The City of Joliet is requesting that the portion of South Chicago Street located at the south end of Eastern Avenue be renamed to Eastern Avenue to distinguish the street from Chicago Street / Route 52 to the west. Prior to the construction of Interstate 80 in the 1960s, this street section was part of Chicago Street, which ran straight north-south through the neighborhood. When Chicago Street was realigned to include the I-80 interchange, this street section was cut off from Chicago Street but was not renamed at that time. The street portion connects to South Eastern Avenue at its north end and terminates at the right-of-way for the I-80 on-ramp at its south end. It is approximately 230 linear feet in length.
The name change will create consistent street naming in the area and therefore aid navigation of the area for emergency responders, deliveries, and all other traffic. The City has notified by mail the property owners adjacent to this street section whose addresses will be affected by the name change.
PLAN COMMISSION:
The Plan Commission reviewed this matter on February 16, 2023. No one appeared or submitted comments in opposition to the petition. Meeting minutes are attached.
RECOMMENDATION OF THE PLAN COMMISSION:

Bob Wunderlich moved that the Plan Commission recommend approval of the Street Name Change for a portion of South Chicago Street to Eastern Avenue, adjacent to 518, 526, 528, and 536 S. Chicago Street. John Kella seconded the motion, which passed with eight (8) aye votes. Voting aye were: Dillon, Kella, Cox, Crompton, Perez, Rousonelos, Wunderlich, and Heath.
